The Rug: a Feminist Literature?!

Image
The first thought when I read this book was that it was really well titled. "The Rug": n o matter where you look, there is no word that goes through the subject as well as this.In fact, I couldn't find anything to say about its subject. A stupid family and a simple rug, that's the whole story. So, I couldn't understand why this piece of story is called "Feminist Literature." " What on earth is this simple story about a woman's story?" That was my question. If anyone had read this book by their own,  I'm sure they'll think the same as me. So I thought about the reason this story is a feminist story in my own way after class. So I came to two simple conclusions about why this simple story is the feminist literature. First, The rug on the floor symbolizes women's oppressed status. In fact, the rug is at the bottom of the whole house. They keep the house warm, they play many good roles, but they end up being trampled and pl

Epiphany that epiphany is nothing.

As a STEM student who attends the literature class, there are so many words that are hard to understand each time. From various literary terms to grasping the author's intentions, many parts do not feel natural and are difficult to understand. And I thought about what I could write and decided to write about epiphany. Because in many of the works that I've been studying these days, epiphany is also the one that has put the most effort into understanding, I thought there could be something that only I could write about.            “An epiphany is an experience of a sudden and striking realization. Generally the term is used to describe scientific breakthrough, religious or philosophical discoveries, but it can apply in any situation to be understood from a new and deeper perspective.” This is how epiphany is defined by Wikipedia. Simply redefining it, I think I can define it as a valuable impression from nothing (Some trivial, daily events.). And James Joyce is a writer who

James Joyce: A Quantum Writer.

Time magazine's best author of the 20th century, One of the most great writers in English literature,  A writer who wrote a book, "There will be more people who write papers than people who read books." Here comes James Joyce: one of the most influential writer in the English literature history, the writer of Ulysses and Finnegans wake, and one of the most lustful gentleman ever. When I first heard his name, I unconsciously regarded him as a typical writers who were stuck in their room and spent their whole life writing one book. But he is more like a genius type who also enthusiastically loved his GF. He was Irish, and attended Irish college. As most of the geniuses do, James Joyce had schizophrenia and several health problems. But as we can see through his letters to Nora, James' GF, he was also full with both sexual and materialistic desires. ( Don't be surprised. "My sweet little whorish Nora," was first part of hist letter to his girlfriend.

How Can Social Circumstances can Affect Literature: Through Anton Chekhov's Short Stories

According to Wikipedia,  Realism is defined as a literary movement was based on " objective reality ." It focuses on showing everyday activities and life, primarily among the middle or lower class society, without romantic idealization or dramatization.  And Anton Chekhov is regarded as one of the best writers to write these kind of stories. And as I read his two short stories: " The Student " and " The Lady with the Dog ,"  I've come to have some doubts about it's value as a literature.  In fact, most of the literary works we have read so far relied on how effective and beautiful the writer could adapt, rearrange, and twist the story in their own way.  So I wondered what the literary trend of realism could mean to us, or more. (Plus, I wasn't able to feel or be moved by this pair of somewhat dull and dry story. And to be honest, it was the main motivation to write this essay doubting its value or meaning toward us.)  And sea

The Best Book I've Ever Read: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Image
I still remember the moment that me taking such exotic book out of local library’s bookshelf. The bookcase, which was about twice my height, stood before me in a stately form, and the book in my hand made me feel strange. And at the moment I read the title of the book, I instinctively became obsessed with the idea that I had to read it. The exotic book held in that eight year old boy’s hands was ‘the Alchemist’ of Paulo Coelho, which eventually became the most influential book in my life. In fact, when I look back now, it's hard to say that ‘The Alchemist’ was a very good option for eight-years-old boy’s book to read. The contents of the book are not sound and the message itself is a little complicated to understand. But at that time, I liked this book very much. At the age of eight, I liked the idea that Santiago was taking a trip and meeting new people throughout the whole book. Maybe I thought of this book as an adventure novel. And so the book went back into the bookcase.

This I believe- I believe I can fly

Image
(Before you start, why don’t you play the BGM below the article? That song is awesome.) “I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky.” This is the famous line from R. Kelly’s mega hit song ‘I Believe I Can Fly’, and it might sound hilarious, but it's the belief that I've had for all my life. Superficially, I understand that believing that one can fly or one can reach the sky might seem a really stupid thing to do. But unlike how it looks stupid, it takes a lot to believe that you can fly. If one really wants to believe that one can actually fly over the sky, he or she must be free from the eyes of others and one needs the courage to push ahead with what one really wants to do and quit doing what one doesn't want to do. The incident just struck in 2007 summer, on the first day of Chuseok vacation (or Korean Thanksgiving day). As usual, I and my family drove for 10 hours and watched TV at my grandma's house in the countryside for the annual Chuseok cer

Metafiction Assignment - Guitar, as my life

The protagonist is remembering his painful old days. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 years ago, Beijing's morning was truly beautiful. The sunlight was splendid, the winds tickled everybody's nose, made them laugh; Beijing was full of joy and bliss, except me, Weng Wang. Once a world's best guitarist, but back then, I was just a social misfit who has had a day of drinking and smoking. Secluding myself from the society, I had quit playing guitar five years before, since the day I made a huge mistake on the world's biggest rock festival. In that festival, we performed as the main band, but I forgot the code progress of the song, so I stopped playing and the stage was completely doomed. After that accident, the band was totally broke, and my career as a guitarist was also stopped. Weng Wang's past. That accident snatched all the passion of 'guitarist Weng' and I was not a guitarist a
